As an important transportation infrastructure, the good condition of highway is directly related to the safety and efficiency of transportation. Common highway maintenance methods are rich and varied, covering routine maintenance, disease repair, preventive maintenance and other aspects.
Daily maintenance is the basic work to keep the road in good condition, which mainly includes cleaning and inspection. In terms of cleaning, dust, garbage and debris are removed from the road surface in a timely manner by means of sweepers and manual sweeping to prevent these substances from causing wear and tear on the road surface and affecting driving safety. Inspection is also essential. Maintenance personnel regularly conduct comprehensive inspections of highways, observing whether there are cracks, potholes, subsidence and other diseases on the road surface, checking whether the roadbed is stable, and whether the facilities along the road, such as guardrails and signs and markings, are in good condition. Once problems are found, they are promptly recorded and appropriate measures are taken to deal with them.

Targeted repair methods are needed for the diseases appearing on the highway. When cracks appear on the road surface, different treatment methods can be selected according to the width and depth of the cracks. For cracks with a small width, grouting is generally used to deal with the cracks, first clean up the debris in the cracks, and then inject hot asphalt, sealant and other materials to prevent water penetration and avoid further expansion of the cracks. If the cracks are wider or deeper, trenching and filling is required to remove the loose parts around the cracks, fill them with new asphalt mixture and compact them. When encountering pothole problems, the broken parts around the pothole should first be cleaned up to form a neat shape, and then filled with hot-mixed asphalt mixture and compacted in layers, so that the filled pavement will be flush with the original pavement and the smoothness and bearing capacity of the pavement will be restored.
Preventive maintenance is a maintenance measure taken when the road is not yet visibly diseased or when the disease is in its early stage, aiming at slowing down the development of the disease and prolonging the service life of the road. Sealing technology is a common preventive maintenance method, including thin slurry sealing and micro-surface treatment. Thin slurry sealing is emulsified asphalt, minerals, water and additives mixed into a thin slurry mixture according to a certain ratio, evenly spread on the road surface, forming a layer of dense sealing layer, play a waterproof, anti-skid, wear-resistant role. Micro-surface is in the thin slurry sealer on the basis of the use of modified emulsified asphalt, its performance is better, suitable for larger traffic flow of the road. In addition, the fog sealer is also an effective means of preventive maintenance, by spraying a thin layer of emulsified asphalt or asphalt rejuvenator, closed pavement pores, to prevent water intrusion and asphalt aging, to restore the anti-skid performance of the road surface and appearance.
