Winter Pavement Maintenance

Before the highway enters the winter maintenance period, the road type should be tidied, the road surface should be smoothed, and cracks should be repaired to ensure that the road surface is flat and does not leak rain and snow. In sections where there may be severe snow accumulation, signposts should be set up on both sides of the road in advance or piles of stones should be used to serve as guide signs for driving. The main maintenance work of roads in winter is mainly snow prevention, snow removal and ice prevention.

snow removal

When the snow thickness on the road is less than 20 centimeters, human or animal-powered snow removal tools (such as scrapers, triangular plows, etc.) can be used to remove snow. When the snow thickness is large, mechanical snow removal should be used. In addition to bulldozers and graders, snow removal machinery also has many special snow removal machinery suitable for various situations, such as snow removal trucks, snow removal graders, rotary snow removal vehicles, snow removal shovels, snow loaders, etc.

Snow removal should begin at the same time as the snowfall or blizzard begins, and the cleared snow should be thrown away from the leeward embankment. At the same time, the snow on both sides of the roadbed should be sorted out. Routes with light traffic may be allowed to temporarily compact snow. Generally, the compaction thickness should not exceed 10 cm, and the surface should be kept flat to ensure the passage of cars.

Ice prevention

The simplest temporary solution to prevent the road surface from becoming slippery due to ice is to spread salt and sand on the ice. A better way is to spread a layer of sand, slag, slag, small gravel or gravel, stone chips, etc. on the icy road. The dosage is about 0.5 to 5 cubic meters per 1,000 square meters. The spreading time should be when the ice and snow melt or start to freeze, so that the material can be partially frozen into the surface ice layer without being separated. Engineering salts such as calcium chloride or sodium chloride powder can also be mixed into these materials for better results. The dosage is about 30 to 40 kilograms per cubic meter of sand. However, salt should not be used on cement concrete pavement to avoid denudation of the pavement.
